a slow read

This year, 2023, I decided to read through my Archaeological Study Bible. I’m taking turns reading books in the New Testament, then the Old Testament, then back to the New Testament. Included in all the additional readings in the archaeological bible are sections on ancient texts and artifacts; cultural and historical notes; archaeological sites; ancient peoples, lands and rulers; and the reliability of the bible.

In addition to reading the study bible notes at the bottom of each page, I’m also reading the corresponding Thru the Bible with J. Vernon McGee commentary for the day’s chapter reading. I learn something new every day. For example, Luke 17:34-36 (KJV) says, “I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.” In Dr. McGee’s commentary he says, “In the days of Noah, who was taken out of the world? Who was left in the world? This is not the Rapture He is talking about. This is, as in the Olivet Discourse in Matthew 24:37-41, a direct reference to taking away the ungodly in judgment and leaving on earth those who will enter the millennial kingdom. Notice that Christ implied that the earth was round—one will be in bed and another working out in the field. There will be night on one side of the earth and day on the other side.”

Fascinating isn’t it! :)
